How to Request Investigative Research Responsibly

A well-formed request is faster to accept, faster to scope, and cheaper to run.

Every reputable research firm screens requests before accepting them. Knowing what that screen looks for makes the process quick rather than uncomfortable.

Identify yourself and your role

Anonymous requests are declined everywhere that takes compliance seriously. State who you are, what organization you represent, and what your role in the matter is.

State the purpose specifically

'I need to find someone' is not a purpose. 'I am the personal representative of an estate in Baltimore County and need to serve notice on a named beneficiary' is. The specific version can be evaluated; the vague one cannot.

Expect these questions

  • What is your relationship to this matter?
  • What will the information be used for?
  • Do you have authority to request this research?
  • Is litigation pending, and is counsel involved?

Requests that are declined

Locating a former partner, monitoring a family member, pursuing someone after a personal dispute, researching a person protected by a court order, or any request where the purpose cannot be verified. Declining these protects subjects, clients, and the integrity of the work.

All case requests are reviewed for a lawful and authorized purpose before acceptance.
